Um heres some ideas.
Make the head body armor.
Make the head a small helmet
Make the tail with the armor the sword

There, a shit load of gun pictures. You don't have to directly copy any of them, but you can look at them all to get an impression of modern weapon design. Cause seriously, gunblades?

a gunblade is overall ineffective. you either have a really fucking heavy and large handgun or a mediocre sword with a very uncomfortable handle. This, ofcourse, does not include bayonets, the REAL gunblades. :o
