Flash CS5.5?

Posted by matt-likes-swords - March 26th, 2012

Anyone have much experience using Flash CS5 or CS5.5?
My demo expired before I managed to play around with it very much...

I noticed it's got some new features for managing projects across several files and sharing symbols.
How well does that work? Could I compile a lot of .fla files into a single .swf file? Do you get any sort of library conflicts?
I'll probably not be able to compile EBF4 if I keep it in one file this time...

Also, what sort of system specs do you think I'll need to get really smooth performance out of it?
I'm planning on getting a new machine soon-ish, and finally upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7.
I don't know if I should get an amazing machine, or if better project organization would be enough to make Flash run a lot faster.

Anyway, just interested to hear from someone who's done any development in the newer versions of Flash.
I'm still using CS3 & 8 for now.

Flash CS5.5?

Comments

I have it but i couldn't tell you much about the technical stuff. In my mind, its almost the same as CS4 for anybody looking to animate with it.

cs5 and 5.5 allow you to export library items as .swc files or "compiled clips" these take up one spot in your library, but contain the ENTIRE .swf they're compiled from... this means you can have entire games in one library item.

We used .swc files to make each level in abobo's big adventure, then imported them into a master file. It made library management a dream and compile times awesome because those clips are "pre compiled" meaning they don't have to be compiled again at runtime.

If you're not using .swc files, then you're missing out on a huge new feature of Flash.

Cheers, that sounds like the kind of thing I'm looking for.

I had no idea about using swc. files in Cs5.5, that sounds like a great thing. I'm currently using the free trial and the only difference I've noticed is the auto-save feature, which is a piece of mind. Also the aesthetics are nicer compared to flash 8 in the layout and design. Still miss flash 8 sometimes.

Also, Pestoforce, do the .swc's take up less file space than the .swf would, just being exported regularly? I mean, if your flash was comprised of .swc when you export it?

I love f8. It was probably my favorite version of flash until CS5.5 came around. Although I'd love to keep using flash 8 forever, I think Adobe (finally) met the par of quality set by macromedia in terms of rapid expansion when CS5.5 came out. Swc files allow for super-easy compilation, as do some of the more basic features, such as a better option for "ERROR - CONFLICTING LIBRARY SYMBOLS."

I'm not going to touch Adobe's versions of Flash until they do the following:
-Make .swf exportation much more stable.
-Add .ogg/.flac support.
-Add gamepad support.
-Make a version of Actionscript that is as easy as AS 1&2 and has AS 3's versatility.
Although the whole .swc thing sounds pretty nice.

I still don't really like AS3...

What I love the most from CS5.5 is the autosave feature. Ever since I got it, I haven't lost any files! Even if it crashes, (which is very rare, for me at least) the most data you'd lose is barely ten minutes of work! The only downside I saw from this feature is that when it saves, for slower computers (like mine) it freezes the screen for a split second, which could get annoying after a while. Other than that, I enjoy it a lot! :]

I guess it's a useful feature, but I can see auto-save getting annoying at times...

I use CS5.5 It is pretty good. They fixed alot of issue with scrubbing and caches and stuff. (i.e. now i can animate :D)

I like it!

What Pestoforce is talking about is pretty much exactly what you need for solving the problem you're having with giant files that are too unwieldy. I'm actually trying the project setup in CS5.5 for the first time to go fully OOP and flexible with my latest project, and it's incredibly simple, it's a great feature.
That, in addition to Autosave and a few other tweaks make it a huge upgrade and more than worth it if you're still on CS3. HOWEVER, the specs for having everything run smoothly are much higher, so you'll be running a lot slower than you would be using CS3. I've recently made a few upgrades and here are my thoughts.
I've probably had Flash crash on me less than 3 times since upgrading to a super fast SSD last month, this is down from at least once a day. If you can afford to try out running yoru operating system/ Flash app from an SSD, you really really won't regret it.
I've also bumped my memory up to 8GB and it's made a huge difference in how snappily everything runs.
Finally consider that Flash is moving more and more into easy adding GPU support for insane speeds/effects, so getting a decent graphics card is, for the first time, important for flash development, onboard graphics aren't going to cut it for much longer if you're using that.
Looking forward to the game, it looks great from the stuff I've seen so far.

Guess I'll be getting an amazing machine then... Thanks for the info.

The Autosave annoyed the shit out of me.
And from the way you color/shade in flash I can tell you'd hate the new color picker as much as I do.
also flames.

I'm not a fan of the new interface in general...

Actually I think the auto-save and auto-recovery are 2 different things, because I was able to turn off auto save, but I can't figure out how to turn off auto-recovery. Indeed they are very interruptive during working with a large file, but it's a price to pay for not losing data.

PART 1

An amazing machine nowdays is probably more amazing than you think, since computer parts are relativley cheap to buy nowdays. I've build my own computer and tried various parts such as Newest i7 and amd FX processors, different kinds of ram, motherboards, graphics cards, water cooling etc.

Anyways this is what i'd recommed for a relative low price which still gets you GREAT performance :)(price is translated from swedish stores and currency )

________________________________________

"AMD FX 3.1" or 3.6 Ghz processor ( about 250 $ )

"Corsair 16GB (4x4096MB) 1600Mhz VENGEANCE" RAM ( about 80$ )

"ASRock 970 Extreme4" ( about 135 $ )

"Asus GeForce GTX 560Ti 1024MB DirectCU II "
( Thats About 300 $ . I recomend buying it on ebay as you could get it for about 200 $ or less )

When it comes to the Power Supply, I recomend pretty much anything from Corsair above 650 W
( About 167 $. I bought my 850W PSU secondhand at a cheaper price than a new 650W , just a tip)

________________________________________

Other stuff to concider :

A "Samsung TFT 27" P2770FH Rose Black" Screen ( About 345 $ )

Maybe even a "Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro" soundcard ( about 185$ )

I REALLY recommend "Corsair Cooling Hydro H100" ( it's about 135 $ but make sure you have 2 fan slots for the radiator, hehe )

When it comes to chassis, taste pretty much comes first. I've got the "Corsair Obsidian 800D Svart"
It's fits all my stuff, has great cooling and so on. the two downsides with it is that it costs ALOT and weighs as much as it costs, so don't plan to move anywhere with it xD

( I've only had experince with corsair when it comes to a PSUs above 500 w. Since I've never been disapointed i've simply kept using them. They are generally great at pretty much everything they do
( exept the damn SSD hehe ) so if you want to be sure, that's what i recomend ^^ )

DON'T BUY AN SSD, a HDD is just fine.
Maybe it's just me, but iv'e had some reeeealy bad experience with them causing blue screens and freezing. Read up about it if you're unsure. ( Tried two from corsair and one from intel )
And if you plan on getting a new HDD pretty much any HDD from Seagate, samsung, hitachi & Western digital with 7200 rpm+ will do :)

PART 2

Other stuff that i recomend is a "Qpad 5k" mouse. Handgasm :3
Don't get any razer crap hehe.

Oooh and a mechanical keyboard. Not only do they have better responce, I just love the way they sound and feel. Way more fun when coding or writing something :)

I don't really have that much experience with speakers. I'm more of a headsett guy. Good brands i can recomend is Steelseries ( not 7h ) , Sennheiser ( costs alot ), and Corsair ( not the 1500 ver )

What else... yea..

Since the processor is using the AM3+ socket and the ram is at 1600MHz, make sure to check the compatibility with the mother board you think suits you.

And there's really nothing wrong about windows XP, but i love Win 7 so an upgrade might not be a bad choice. It will cost you quite some money though. I don't really wanna tip you about pirating it, but it is a great way of getting you computer for a cheaper price if youre into that, just sayin. Same thing goes for flash.

Anyways.. Win 8 is on its way pretty soon and so is Flash CS6. Maybe it's worth waiting for :p

When it comes to changing flash versions it just takes some getting used to. You know when people whine over that facebook/youtube changes something when it really is for the better, It's pretty much the same here. It might take some time to get used to the the new color scheme though.

I don't have that much knowledge about managing several files into a single swf, but it has to be possible somehow.

That's pretty much it i guess. I hope it helped :)

@ theunderminor: Huh... your PC choice looks to be the better part of $1,200 and change.
I paid about $660 and change for something significantly less than what you're playing with, but it gets' the job done. The only "upgrade" I made was to park an NVIDIA Ge520 in the old clunker. Been playing shit like RAGE, Dawn of War II (and add-ons), and a few otherwise CPU-intensive games with no (or minor) issues.

Even with the new GFX card, the cooling fans (One on the processor, one on the GFX card) sound like a small-time airstrip when I play shit like Mass Effect 3, RAGE or DoW 2. But, joy of joys, it doesn't CTD while I'm playing games like New Vegas or Mass Effect 3 n'more.

Just to say, Flash CS5.5 lets you work in "Classic" (Flash 8) style, but with CS5.5's new features.

In the top-right next to the search bar, there should be a word saying something like "Essentials", change that to "Classic" and you shouldn't have too much problem with it.

As for power/specs. Flash runs fine for me on a 2.66ghz, dual-core intel processor, 4gb ram, 256mb Nvidia Geforce 9600m graphics and Windows 7 ultimate (64-bit), so as far as I'm aware, you don't need to go all out on power, but the extra power would help you in the long run of keeping a computer for many years.

Just my two cents and all that. :3

heyheyheheyhey wenz teh beta cumming out lololololol i caint w8 4 eht

What's this for???

Is this EBF 4?

soo many numbers and symbols, is this how ebf4 going to look like?

idk ima have ask my cuz about this not easy with machine my self but my cuz a exoert with them mit as well ask him mit take 3-5 day for him to send it back till then its just gota wait to see what diffrent with those flash.
